Tough, hardwearing, coir. One Village Coir is made to finished size on the loom, not cut from big sheets. This means that the structure of the edges in these mats is properly finished flat on all four sides. These are robust edges that don't need fabric bindings as applied by others. ( Cloth edges might look nice at first, but imagine how they look after a few weeks on the floor.... ) Note also the extra tight weave in One Village Coir: to improve strength and longevity. 100% natural coir, unbleached, and without artificial backing. ( By contrast, backings trap dust, and can make floors sweat. ) One Village Coir comes from a village cooperative society in Kerala (a place name that means «the land of coconuts») on India's Arabian-sea coast. Do you need to cut your One Village coir? One Village Coir comes only in the 5 sizes shown. We are not able to supply other sizes. If you decide to cut these mats (for example, with a stanley knife), you will then be faced with an unfinished edge that will quickly fray if not bound over. You could try binding your cut edge with heavy carpet tape, perhaps then facing with fabric sewn through the mat. Another method is to trap the cut edge under skirting. But we cannot vouch for the effectiveness of these methods. If possible, it is best not to cut because the original edges on our coir have been properly finished off on the loom when the product was made, and left like that they will give the best longevity of service.
